What a giving statement must include

For any single gift of $250 or more, the IRS requires the donor to have a written acknowledgment from the church before they file — a bank record alone isn't enough. To be valid under IRS Publication 1771, the statement has to show the church's name, the amount of cash given, a description (not a dollar value) of any non-cash gifts, and a line stating whether the church gave anything back in exchange. This tool fills all of that in for you.

The most-missed piece is that last line. When a donor just gives — the usual tithe or offering — the statement must say "no goods or services were provided in exchange, other than intangible religious benefits." When the church did give something back (a fundraiser dinner, event tickets), only the amount above that item's value is deductible, and the statement has to say so. The full rules, deadlines, and edge cases are in the guide to church contribution statement requirements.

Not every dollar belongs on the deductible total, either — a gift earmarked for a specific individual generally isn't a deductible contribution. And this is general information, not tax advice; confirm your church's situation with a qualified professional.

Do this for every donor in one click

Typing statements one by one works for a handful of donors. Vestrybooks records every gift by giver and fund all year, then generates every household's year-end statement at once — the January Button — with the right IRS language already on it. No spreadsheet, no copy-paste.
